Historical Chronology of Kariye
**Era of Constantine the Great**
- It is said that the remains of Saint Babylas and his 84 disciples were brought from Nicomedia (modern-day Izmit) to Istanbul and buried in the Kariye area. However, archaeological excavations in Kariye have not found any data dating back to the era of Constantine.
**6th Century - Era of Emperor Justinian I**
- The oldest subterranean layer in Kariye dates back to the era of Emperor Justinian I.
- It is known that Saint Theodore, a relative of Empress Theodora, established a monastery in Kariye.
**9th Century**
- Various additions were made to Kariye.
**11th Century - Era of Isaac Komnenos**
- Isaac Komnenos and Maria Doukaina made various contributions to Kariye.
**13th Century - Contributions of the Mongols' Mary (Theotokos of the Mongols)**
- The Theotokos of the Mongols made contributions to Kariye.
**14th Century - Era of Theodoros Metochites**
- Theodoros Metochites made significant contributions to Kariye by adding the funerary chapel and frescoes.
**15th Century - Ottoman Era**
- **1511**: After the conquest of Istanbul, Kariye was converted into a mosque by Hadım Ali Pasha. The mosaics and frescoes were covered with plaster.
**16th Century**
- **1564**: A German traveler visiting Istanbul mentioned the main gate and the cistern of the mosque in his memoirs.
**20th Century**
- **1945**: Kariye was converted into a museum.
- **1958**: Restoration works were carried out by the American Byzantine Institute.
**21st Century**
- **2024**: Kariye was converted back into a mosque.
