Beyazit Square

Beyazıt Square was used as a necropolis during the ancient Greek city of Byzantion. therefore, a sarcophagus was found during the tunnel works of the municipality recently. In Roman times, this area was called the bull square Forum Tauri. The Arc de Triomphe was added in 393, during the reign of Theodosius the Great. After these construction works, Beyazıt Square was named forum Theodosiacum.

Beyazit Mosque

There is always a movement in Beyazıt Square. Some try to catch up with their class. Some go to the covered bazaar when they are worried about bread. but the place where this movement ends is the courtyard of Beyazıt Mosque. When you enter its courtyard, it is as if you have entered a completely different world. When you enter the building, you make it look like another building. When you start thinking about what it looks like, you will finally find the answer. The answer is in Hagia Sophia. Because the architect Yakup Shah used Hagia Sophia as a model while building the Mosque. According to Evliya Çelebi, Sultan Beyazıt was the imam of the congregation on the opening day.

Who is Sultan Beyazit the second?

Beyazit Grand Bazaar

As you know, the Grand Bazaar is a bazaar built on the land between two mosques (Nurosmaniye Mosque and Beyazıt). Rough outline When viewed from above, it looks like a rectangle. The covered bazaar, which consists of two sections, Sandal Bedesteni and Cevahir Bedesten, where it was first built, has increased over time by adding new streets like a spider web. According to the rumor today, there are around 4000 shops inside the closed. When foreign exchange starts to rise in Turkey, it is right next to the covered bazaar in Tahtakale, where all the news channels are connected to their correspondents. In addition, the way of all families who went out for wedding shopping passes through the covered bazaar. Because it is very famous to exchange gold from the Grand Bazaar as a wedding tradition. In addition, the place where many tourists who come to Istanbul do not leave without seeing is the covered bazaar.

Booksellers' Bazaar is a bazaar full of the smell of books, located near the covered bazaar. Everyone who has a love for books has one day gone to the second-hand booksellers' bazaar.

Beyazıt Huseyin Avni Dede

The most famous person in the Booksellers' Bazaar is undoubtedly Hüseyin Avni Dede. It is located in front of the big plane tree, which is right next to the bazaar. He makes a living by selling his poetry book. He greets everyone, local and foreign, with a smiling face. When you come to the Sahaf Bazaar, don't forget to greet him.

Beyazıt Istanbul University

The first palace built by Mehmed the Conqueror after the conquest of Istanbul is used as Istanbul University today. It was used as the army headquarters during the First World War.

Beyazit Fire Tower

If a building was to be built in Istanbul during the Ottoman period, it would not be built as rudely as it is today. One of the biggest problems of Istanbul is fire. because Istanbul neighborhoods are full of wooden mansions. Unfortunately, most of these mansions were burned. As a remedy, it is decided to build a fire tower. Architect Senekerim Balyan is given this job. Senekerim Balyan looked at the Istanbul Silhouette from all over Istanbul for this tower to be added to the Istanbul Skyline. In the end, he decides on Beyazıt as the most ideal place.

Beyazit Simkashane Silver Mint House

Simkeşhane was built as a mint after Fatih Sultan Mehmet conquered Istanbul. When the Mint building was moved to the Topkapı Palace, it was used by the silver and gold craftsmen. The building, which was destroyed in the fire during the reign of Sultan Mehmet IV, was rebuilt by the Valide Sultan Rabia Gülnüş Ümmetullah. In the 1950s, many parts of the building were demolished within the scope of road widening works. What remains today is used as the Orhan Kemal Public Library.

Beyazit Turkish Bath

Beyazit Mosque is actually a work of Beyazit Kulliye. But the other structures of this Kulliye are not located right next to the Mosque like other Ottoman Kulliyes. For example, the Beyazit bath can be reached by walking in five minutes from the mosque. The most important event that took place in Beyazıt Hamam was the Patrona Halil Rebellion against the Sultan Ahmet III of the Tulip Era, which was organized in this bath. Beyazıt Hamam can be visited as a museum today. It is recommended for those who want to learn Turkish Bath culture without bathing.

Beyazit Sayyid Hasan Pasha Inn

The construction of this inn, which was started by Seyyid Hasan Pasha, who had served as the grand vizier for two years and ten months during the reign of Sultan Mahmut I, but was completed by Sultan Mahmut I after the Grand Vizier was dismissed, was half of the building during the road widening works in 1950, such as Simkaşhane. The other story is that Sultan Mahmut I forbade the construction of new zoning works without his permission. But Sayyid Hasan Pasha had this inn built by ignoring this rule. It is said that the Grand Vizier was dismissed due to the construction of this inn. In the past, local people called this building as broomsticks. While there are leather jacket shops in general, it is used as a restaurant and cafeteria after the recent renovations.
