Fener Balat is one of the most famous weekend activities in Istanbul. People from all corners of Istanbul come to the cafes and colorful streets of Fener to have a good time and socialize. With this feature, it has recently become a wonderful place where Istanbulites can spend their weekends. We invite you to discover this beautiful district of Istanbul for a weekend.

Fener Trip will not be without Balat

Fener is a charming Istanbul district on the edge of the Golden Horn. After the conquest of Istanbul, it was allocated as the living space of the Greek Population. Balat, the neighboring district of the lighthouse, was allocated to the Jews who came upon the invitation of Sultan Beyazıt. Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in the Fener and Balat region for years. Of course, sometimes they are broken. But this is a cosmopolitan beauty of Istanbul.

Fener Balat is known together as Zeki Metin, the inseparable duo in Turkish Cinema. If you are planning a Fener Trip, you should also consider Balat. In another article of our blog, we talked about places to see from Balat.
You can read the article we wrote about the Balat trip by clicking.

Where is Fener Balat

We kindly ask our guests to come to the meeting point by their own means during the Fener Balat tour. But our guests ask us how to reach Fener. In answer to these questions, in this part of the article, we will provide you with information about the location and transportation of the Fener

Fener is a beautiful Istanbul district of Istanbul, located in the historical part of the Golden Horn that separates the European lands in Istanbul. You can use Eyüp Sultan Municipality buses departing from Taksim and Eminönü to reach Fener. Or you can reach the lighthouse from Üsküdar by using the Golden Horn ship line organized by the Istanbul Municipality. You can also reach Fener by the Eminönü-Eyüp Tram line, which is currently under construction and is said to be completed very soon. Those who want to come to Fener with their own vehicle, unfortunately, may experience parking problems. For parking, they should use the car parks in either Balat district or Cibali district.

Places to visit in Fener district during Fener Balat trip

After your breakfast at the Fener, a little stroll will be great to digest what we ate. We would like to list what you should see in the Fener in items.

1.Fener Greek Patriarchate

Fener Greek Patriarchate should be one of the places that everyone should definitely visit during the Fener tour. Fener Greek Patriarchate is the head church for approximately 300 million Orthodox communities in the world. The last word in the solution of all kinds of problems belongs here. The Fener Greek Patriarchate is also very important, as everyone who goes to Italy visits the church of Saint Pietro. During your visit to the Patriarchate, you can see the stone pedestal on which Jesus was tied during torture. You'll also love its wonderfully patterned iconata. You will also have the chance to see the Enclosures that protect the relics of saints and saints, another important feature of this church.

2.Fener Greek boys' high school

Fener Greek Boys' High School, which was confused with the Fener Greek Patriarchate for years, is a structure that looks like a bird flying towards the Golden Horn. The part where you will get tired the most during your Fener Balat trip is to arrive at this building. Therefore, we recommend that you put your visit to this structure at the beginning of your tour. Otherwise, you can give up going to this building due to the fatigue that will occur later in the tour.

3. Fener Church of Lady of the Mongols

You are tired until the Fener Greek church. Just photographing high school from the outside may sound like blasphemy to you. You may think that I have endured so much trouble for this. When you open some Oysters you can see the pearl. The pearl of the high school, De Fener Church of Our Lady of the Mongols. It is the only church in Istanbul that has been active since the Byzantine period. Therefore, you should add this place to your itinerary in Fener Balat Trip.

4.Fener Dimitri Kandemir

Dimitri Kandemir, who was the Governor of Wallachia and Moldavia in the Ottoman Period, was living in his palace in Fener when he was in Istanbul. This palace functions as a cafe area today. And the most famous street of Fener, Merdivenli Street, is very famous because it is very close. This street, which consists of colorful steps, looks like a rainbow. You should have a souvenir photo taken in this street.

5. Fener Bulgarian Church

The Bulgarian Church, which has been closed to visitors for a while since it has been under restoration, was opened to worship again in 2018 with a ceremony attended by the state officials, after the restoration was completed. It is a church that was built with the permission of Sultan Abdulaziz. The only building made of iron in human history is only three on Earth. But the only surviving structure of these is the Bulgarian church. For this reason, the second name of this church is the "Iron Church". In addition, since the acoustics of this church are wonderful, it is also used in the organizations of classical music concerts. Do not forget to visit this place during your Fener Balat trip.

6. Fener Colored houses

Although the name "Balat" comes directly to the consciousness of everyone about colorful houses in Istanbul, as we mentioned above, Fener is like we cannot tell without Balat. You can't tour Balat without Fener. Because half of the colorful houses in the region are within the borders of Fener district. For this reason, do not leave the region without seeing the colorful and bay windows on your Fener Balat trip.
