Historical Roots of the Blue Mosque


The site where the Blue Mosque now stands was once home to a Roman and Byzantium Royal Family Palace. However, the palace lay in ruins after the Crusades. Sultan Ahmet decided to repurpose this historical area for the construction of the Blue Mosque.

Architectural Marvels of the Blue Mosque


More than just a mosque, the Blue Mosque complex encompasses various structures, including a Madrasah, Bazaar, Turkish Bath, Ablutional Fountain, and Tomb. Constructed over seven years, between 1609 and 1616, by the order of Sultan Ahmet, the mosque boasts six minarets and 16 balconies. Designed by Sedefkar Mehmed Agha, a protegé of Architect Sinan, the Blue Mosque's interior spans 52 meters in width and 54 meters in length. The main dome, with a diameter of 23 meters and a height of 43 meters, stands as a testament to Ottoman architectural prowess.

Entry and Tickets for the Blue Mosque


Entrance to all mosques in Turkey, including the Blue Mosque, is free of charge. No tickets are required.

Opening Hours for Visitors


The Blue Mosque is open for visitors during specific hours:
- Open: 08:30, Closed: 12:15
- Open: 14:00, Closed: 16:15
- Open: 17:15, Closed: 18:15

On Fridays, the mosque opens at 2:30 pm due to Friday Holy Praying.

Blue Mosque Etiquette:


1. Respect the religious significance of the mosque and those who worship.
2. Photography and videography are allowed inside the building but not during prayers.
3. Shoes should be removed at the entrance, and plastic bags are provided for storage.
4. Modest and loose-fitting attire is recommended for both men and women. Women must wear a headscarf.
5. Maintain a low voice and refrain from eating or drinking inside the mosque.
