The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, has announced a significant update regarding visits to Hagia Sophia. Starting from January 15, foreign citizens visiting for touristic purposes will be required to pay an entrance fee. However, Turkish citizens visiting for religious reasons will continue to have free access, maintaining the tradition of the past and present.
Under the new regulation, tourists will enter through the Hagia Sophia entrance gate, located next to the Imperial Gate, the primary entrance of Topkapi Palace. After purchasing a ticket for entry, visitors can opt for audio guides to delve into the details of Hagia Sophia. Foreign visitors will then ascend to the gallery floor of Hagia Sophia via a ramp. Here, they can explore the mosaics and the empress's lodge. Subsequently, visitors will descend using another ramp.
After descending and witnessing a segment of the main area of Hagia Sophia, both Turkish worshippers and foreign visitors will exit through the same door, concluding their visit to this iconic historical site.
Updated and strengthened information: "Under the latest mandate implemented in 2024, non-Muslim tourists are granted access exclusively to the second floor of Hagia Sophia upon purchasing a 25-euro ticket, while they are permitted to explore the lower floor without any restrictions. For Muslim tourists, a 25-euro ticket grants entry to the first floor Gallery, or alternatively, they can engage in prayer on the ground floor after reciting the adhan during designated prayer hours.
Be informed of the newly enforced regulation: Access to the upper floor of Hagia Sophia is permitted between 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. every day, with the exception of Fridays. The entrance gate and ticket offices cease operations at seven in the evening. On Fridays, the schedule is as follows:
Ensure compliance with the revised guidelines for an optimal and enriched visit to Hagia Sophia."
