Sultan Costume Exhibitions: Unveiling the Regal Legacy

In a momentous celebration during the Ramadan Feast of 2023, the third courtyard of Topkapı Palace, known as the enderun, witnessed the grand reopening of the Kaftan exhibition worn by Ottoman Sultans. This ceremonious event, graced by President Erdoğan, marked the end of years of closure, offering a spectacular revival of Ottoman opulence.

Unlike the previous version of the exhibition, which showcased a limited number of caftans, the newly arranged exhibition space boasts a breathtaking display of hundreds of caftans that had patiently awaited their moment in the palace's warehouses. Visitors to the Sultan Kaftans exhibition are now greeted with an immersive experience, where these magnificent robes appear suspended in the air, etching an indelible image in their minds.

Adding to the allure, a newly inaugurated section in the exhibition room showcases the talismanic shirts worn beneath the caftans by the Sultans. These shirts, imbued with mystical significance, evoke reminiscent scenes of Hakan Protector, the iconic character from the famed Netflix series. The talismanic shirts, much like those worn by Hakan, reputedly shielded the wearer even from bullets, creating an aura of intrigue and mysticism.

The exhibition unfolds further on the second floor, a noteworthy addition to this cultural treasure trove. Here, resplendent robes akin to the Sultan's caftans await enthusiasts. Beyond the Sultan's attire, visitors can marvel at the Valide Sultan Costumes, the Prince's Costumes, and the regal ensembles worn by the Sultan's wives.

With these newly unveiled sections at Topkapı Palace, we advise those embarking on this cultural journey to allocate ample time, considering dedicating at least half a day to explore the opulence of the palace. A visit to the historical peninsula in Istanbul is best savored over two or three days, ensuring an immersive experience in the rich tapestry of Ottoman history.
